Differences between SEM and SEO

15.05.2019

If you are interested in digital marketing or digital fields, you should be familiar with the concepts of SEO and SEM. Leveraging SEO and SEM optimization will help your posts on your brand's website get ahead of your competitors’ websites and help you gain more customers.

What is SEO?

SEO, as we mentioned earlier on our website, is an abbreviation for Search Engine Optimization. 95% of users are directed to the results on the first page of search engines. Therefore, improving your website with good SEO will increase your site’s advantage by making it one of the first results. To explain it for Google, Google collects all results written within a specific topic and groups websites based on their reliability and popularity. In this case, your website’s link will appear on reliable sites, and it will look more valuable in Google’s algorithm, increasing the possibility of appearing on the first pages. When determining the result ranking, Google not only pays attention to the number of links obtained from other sites but also to the reliability of the sites where these links are shared. This system was created by Larry Page and is called PageRank in his honor.

Therefore, your website will attract users while also complying with Google’s PageRank law. One of the most successful ways for your website to be continuously selected by customers is user experience.

What is SEM?

SEM, which stands for Search Engine Marketing, is a term used in digital marketing. SEM is as important as SEO.

SEM is typically used for the ranking of search or upload websites in search engine results.

By identifying the most used keywords and phrases in searches related to your brand and the area where you want to advertise, you can ensure your website's search or display ads are prominent. Unlike SEO, SEM places your brand in an advertisement spot. In platforms like Google AdWords, SEM also requires a specific amount based on the popularity of a keyword from your allocated advertising budget for each click.

If we briefly compare the differences between these two applications that are important for your website and customer base, SEO refers to small adjustments made to your website to improve ranking, while SEM refers to paid brand advertisements.
