Years ago, many people didn’t even know that the profession of an SMM manager existed. There was a time when we only used our mobile phones for texting and communication. Then suddenly, something called the internet entered and evolved into what we now refer to as "technology."
In recent years, this innovation has become so deeply embedded in our lives that it is now impossible to imagine life without it. This development has led to the increased activity of social media and the advancement of marketing within that realm. Individuals who create and manage advertising strategies for businesses, companies, or individuals on social networks are known as SMM managers.
Let’s further define what a social media specialist is. A social media specialist is a person responsible for increasing brand awareness and improving marketing activities. They are also responsible for planning, implementing, and tracking strategies to increase sales. Below are a few general responsibilities of a social media specialist. The duties and responsibilities of SMM managers vary depending on brand needs, but if we were to give a general job description, we could include the following:
Preparing, editing, adding, and publishing images and videos on a daily basis;
Researching, comparing, and analyzing the target audience. Based on this, especially forming and implementing a social media strategy;
Staying up to date at all times and responding to feedback and suggestions from social media;
Making corrections when necessary, issuing public statements in response to negative news;
Managing brand accounts, organizing campaigns, and increasing engagement with social media accounts;
Effectively handling crisis situations.
What does an SMM Manager do?
In short, the above are just a few of the job responsibilities of a social media specialist. In this era where brands and companies are growing rapidly through the power of social media, it can be said that most of the workload falls on the social media specialist. Therefore, it's not possible to limit this profession with a single job description. A social media specialist does more than just share content. They create brand strategies and, in a way, act as the "virtual voice" of the brand.
A social media specialist must also be a professional observer. They should closely observe social media purchasing behavior and follow essential principles when creating strategies. As mentioned above, this professional should also be a good crisis manager—handling everything from customer complaints to public scandals calmly. They are responsible for saving the company or brand from crises with minimal damage. Delivering necessary public announcements is also one of the core tasks of an SMM manager.
How to become a social media specialist?
There is no university department called Social Media Marketing, but some faculties offer courses related to social media. For example, communication faculties are one of the first steps toward gaining the necessary knowledge for social media experience. You can gain knowledge about social media through social media certificate programs and progress on your way to becoming a social media specialist. You can start as a social media intern and, over time, continue your career as an SMM manager based on your acquired knowledge and experience.
