What is Advertising? — Advertising is a form of communication used to influence people to buy a product, use a service, or support a political candidate or idea.
Advertising can be delivered through various mediums such as newspapers, the internet, radio, billboards, etc. Typically, advertisements contain information about the name of the product or service and how it benefits the consumer. Advertising often attempts to convince potential buyers to use a particular brand's products or services. Modern advertising developed during the late 19th and early 20th centuries as mass consumption increased.
Commercial advertisers aim to increase the consumption of their products or services by associating the product’s features with the brand through branding. Advertising information can be delivered via a variety of media, including traditional newspapers, magazines, radio, television, and billboards. Advertising may also be placed by advertising agencies on behalf of companies or organizations.
Organizations that spend on advertising can promote not only products or services for consumers but also political parties, religious organizations, and government agencies.
Advertising costs have been rising in recent years. In 2007, advertising spending in the U.S. was $150 million, and worldwide it was $385 million. This figure is expected to exceed $450 million by 2016. Nowadays, many people are searching for cheaper, yet more effective advertising methods. Relatively cheaper forms of advertising include direct marketing and promotional products. Direct marketing refers to a method of directly impacting people through events or as part of a campaign. Promotional products are often cheaper since they are purchased in bulk. Together, direct marketing and promotional products provide an effective marketing campaign on a smaller budget.
